My wife and I have eight children ranging in age from 15 years to 17 months
old. I have just begun to experience the transforming power of having a family
mission and vision statement.
One week after writing out the mission statement and discussing it with my
two oldest sons (James, 15 and Corey, 13) I was impressed how all of us felt
more direction and purpose. In fact, the three of us wrote out goals related
to the fulfillment of each part of the mission statement. The very act of
studying the mission and writing out goals provided an atmosphere of accountability
that had never existed before.
For example, both of my sons have written goals for the time they will go
to bed on a school night, wake up, and spend quiet time with the Lord. Additionally,
they have goals for spending personal time with their siblings to develop
family unity. My oldest sons and I meet every Sunday night for an hour to
spend time praying together, studying God’s Word and see how we are
tracking against our goals. There is no doubt whether or not we are making
progress against these goals and, as a result, we are all able to hold each
other accountable and encourage each other in these specific areas.
My sons are thanking me for holding them accountable and I have given them
permission to hold me accountable in the areas where I know I need to grow
too. We have only begun to scratch the surface of all that God will do in
our family as we develop the habits that will lead to fulfillment of our mission!
